Extend an answer without memorising a script

Move from a short response to a clear, connected explanation using an everyday detail.

Answer first

Begin with a direct response to the question. If someone asks whether you enjoy cooking, say whether you do before introducing a story. This gives the listener a clear starting point.

Add a reason and a detail

Explain why, then give a specific example from your experience. You might describe one dish, when you make it or who you share it with. You do not need an elaborate story for every question.

Listen to yourself

Record a short answer in Ruebex Speaking practice, or with the recorder on your phone. Listen once for meaning: did you answer the question? Listen again for long pauses or repeated phrases. Try again using different wording rather than memorising a perfect transcript. In Speaking practice you can also ask for AI feedback with a band practice estimate, not an official IELTS score.
