Read for purpose
Ask what the paragraph is doing: introducing a problem, explaining a cause, comparing approaches or describing a result. A detail might be memorable without being the reason the paragraph exists.
Write a short label
After reading, write a five-to-eight-word label without copying a whole sentence. Then check whether it covers the paragraph as a whole. If it describes only one example, broaden it.
A small check of understanding
The town added shaded benches, planted trees near crossings and opened a drinking-water point. These changes were designed to make walking more comfortable during summer.
